5771 Tammuz 17

In Numbers on July 19, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Tables struck in days of yore
By prophet hands of ire rage
Re-wrought, worshipped, and smashed again
How often?  By whom?

Today represents a hodge-podge of events:

Destruction of the Tablets on Mount Sinai
Daily sacrifices cease
An idol is built in the Temple
Roman Commander Apostomus burns a Torah scroll
The walls of Jerusalem are breached

A mixture of tragedies?  A set of idolatrous events?  Or a struggle between idolatry and the other?

Moses broke the tablets on Mount Sinai.  Who breaks them today?  And why?

Why do we fast today?
